Staff Meeting June 2016

10:30 AM at CRI

HR Report

Bruce reported that CRI hired an HR rep to find gaps and fix them. Got HR report back and realized we were understaffed in HR department since the programming has increased by 5X. Board approved Director of Operations, Ted is filling the position for a 2-month contract. Opening position for application.  Create better conditions for employment, address issues like sensitivity training, and continue to work on creating a positive and safe environment for employees and rowers alike.

Facility registrations have been flat for 3 years. This year facility fees are 12% up from last year. Does not factor in CRRLs and Team Building.

Update on Cleaning CRI effort

Kate reported that removing the fridge in the office was productive. Tidying up daily has not been as successful as would have hoped. Brandon’s increased hours have had a positive impact.

General discussion about oar handles and germ transmission, also a reminder to make sure they get put away. There have several sets that have been left outside for days at a time.  Suggestion to take a picture and send to coaching list.  Outside of the building has been very impressive. The Juniors made it through a championship regatta with zero damage.

Action for oar discussion:  follow up by email for those interested.

2 minute program updates, including one safety action

Para- Beginning summer term. Started inclusion racing- is Mondays at 5:00. LTA athletes will be fully here by Monday. Selection camp is spreading through the month of June. Practice 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Borrowed oars and Hudson got us a 4. Kate will be focusing on a lot of inquiries while Ellen is on the water more. Ellen is having all rowers get fully captains tested.

Military: started summer session. Looking to do some racing this summer. Made sure that all of tabbies out there have pontoon brackets for our VA groups. Every tubby can have pontoons.

Middle School:

3550 students by the end of the school year. In 27 schools this year (10 more than last year). Has about 10 more field trips to complete. Indoor Middle School Championships hit 280 this year, so we will be moving it elsewhere next year to fit more people.

1.middle school summer skills.

Racking should be in next week. Boat fleet is ready to deliver. Programming is on website ready to go. NLTR Day was last weekend, hosted to introduce locals to the idea of community rowing.

Talking to Laselle and Nobles about safety. As CRI is managing, we are also taking on management of safety. 6 quads, 6 doubles, and about 18 singles for community use.

Comp Youth reported that the Spring season was successful, strong results for all four squads and for the entire squads. Men qualified 4 boats for youth nationals. Women’s boat did not qualify, but they petitioned and were accepted in the Women’s 8+. Summer 2 starts Next Friday. Summer I has started and is running. Will has been very focused on boat handling and equipment. “Hulls don’t touch docks” has been his motto. Women’s side, just making sure that we have all of our small boats (and all boats) in sight. CRI established a new event, “Crom” a “prom” type event with rowers in order to build community and have a fun time. 197 people.

The Wellesley middle school event field trip was very successful, rowing, water quality studies partner with CRWA. Volunteers and partners it commented that they want to do it again, well organized and fun.

OWL is running well, but trying to implement athletes under the para category. These patients aren’t served as well as the doctors and families would like.  We would like them to join existing para programming as a pilot to see if it works and if there is demand for it, which could lead to a separate OWL session for kids that are classified as para athletes. Fitness in the City is one step down on the BMI scale from the OWL group. They are coming through the Charles River Health Center, and are following the same format but it is for patients and their family members. 10 people registered and have had near perfect attendance. Has a new 3rd coach, Kara White, and more coaches can help maintain safety.

Rec Summer Youth is starting in a week and a half. LTR is full, crew league is nearly full. 2 week sessions start the week of July 11th. Dale Hurley is going to be coordinate the entire group. Our Adult Intro to Row is almost completely full and will be running 2 barges.

The Comp Men have 4 boats this year, 1 more than last year. 5 coxswains and generally boating 4 of them so that 1 is able to learn about how to manage the river and learn how to steer and manage practice. Comp women now have 4.5 eights and 7 coxswains.

New IRL Class starts orientation in 2.5 weeks. Class of 2016 graduation is a week from Saturday from 10-10:45 in the morning. All of the fellows coming in will have gone through onboarding before they start class and start coaching.

The Charles River Rowing League is introducing a lot more people to the sport this year, and Pat has hired 2 part time students to help. They will be helping with CRRL & Corporate events. Next week on Thursday the 16th- 40 Tufts employees will be here volunteering.  Pat has made a safety playbook that goes to the coaches for corporate events.

Development group has 2 new lightweight rowers who have moved here from OKC. Peter Donohoe, a 3 time Olympian and strength trainer for the Boston Ballet, is working with the development group to test a new system that will teach rowers to activate the entire group of core muscles and allow rowers to use their hip joint more effectively.  If the effort works, the intention is to share the training protocol with the entire CRI community.

Row Boston has had 4 girls graduate this year, and all are off to college. MLK Summer Scholars are going to work in the shop for the summer.

Meeting adjourned before noon.
